What’s Trending for 2018
Twice a year we make our pilgrimage to New York and Chicago to attend the largest men’s fashion shows in the world, explore the newest trends on the market and then face the tough job of deciding what we want to buy and bring back to Huntsville for the following season.
We recently returned from looking at the new collections for Fall 2018, and were not disappointed. Several trends definitely emerged, and we couldn’t resist sharing with you.
And of course, as we are looking forward to this upcoming Spring season, we also wanted to share a few trends for you to be on the lookout for in the coming months as well!
FALL 2018 Trends
Corduroy was everywhere at market this season. From five pockets to suiting; yes, our favorite tailored lines couldn’t resist the urge to incorporate corduroy into their collections for next Fall. For us, we will tread lightly into the world of corduroy although we love this lush yet hardy fabric. Five pockets are an easy way to bring corduroy into your wardrobe without getting carried away, and we love the new collection from Citizens. Also, another easy yet cool way to bring corduroy into your wardrobe is with a great patch pocket coat. Hardwick and Q by Flynt had some nice fabrics that would go great with jeans for a more casual look.
Yes, turtlenecks are making a come back when it comes to tailored clothing. We saw a lot of turtlenecks accompanying suits as well as sport and soft coats. Very soft and luxurious fabrics such as a fine merino wool or cashmere is the way to go here. It’s a really nice simple look without a lot of fuss. Throw an Edward Armah pocket square with this look and you are good to go. We are loving Johnstons of Elgins new superfine cashmere/silk turtlenecks; you won’t believe how incredible these pieces feel.
We personally are a sucker for an amazing knit polo. These aren’t the polos of yester year, but fine fabrics with an amazing hand. Pair these great polos with a sport coat and jeans and you have a great fresh look. For us, it’s all about the hand of the fabric and the collar. Sunspel had some fabulous options for our more tailored looks, and we are loving Life After Denim’s casual polo with an open collar.
Lightweight Fabrics for Seasonal Coats
Many of the lines have gotten the message that those of us in the deep South can’t wear sport coats made of heavy fabrics such as Harris Tweed (12 oz+ weighted fabric). We are starting to see more and more weightless unconstructed soft coats in great seasonal fabrics – perfect for our market!
SPRING 2018 Trends
We’ve all loved the soft coats from Hardwick, LBM 1911 and Hickey Freeman with soft shoulders and predominantly unconstructed silhouettes over the past few seasons. However, the shells are getting even lighter (and thank goodness with our Alabama heat!). Hickey Freeman and Culturata have some amazing new weightless fabrics coming to the shop this spring that will truly surprise you.
Who doesn’t love a fun print for a little extra interest in the closet? For us, a little goes a long way. Having a great short sleeve fun print really is a great way to update the closet this Spring. We’ve got some amazing pieces coming from Borgo 28, Billy Reid and Ledbury to name a few – some more subtle, while others will definitely get you noticed!
The lines between work out gear and true leisure wear continues to blur this season. No one does this better in our opinion than Tasc Performance. We’ve got some great items coming in this Spring that will take you from the gym to coffee Downtown at Honest or from the golf course to a late lunch at your favorite spot.
Sneakers have been in for a while now; however, many of the lines are going back to a very minimalistic approach and keeping it simple. Trask has some amazing options in rich hues with a simple white bottom sole. Several lines are taking this trend to the next level blurring the lines between sneakers and loafers for a little bit more refined leisure shoe.
Here’s a sneak peek at some of these 2018 trends we snapped while we were at market!
